A short introduction to Rendering

Rendering is the last major stage in the graphics pipeline and the final appearance on the display of an object and its animation is determined within this stage. Rendering is the process of generating an image from a graphical model, typically within a computer program. These models contain objects in strictly defined data structures and languages. Typically geometry, viewpoint, texture, lighting and shading information are contained therein. The rendering engine, which can consist of a dedicated hardware or a software program running on a general purpose or dedicated processor, generates a digital image in a so called frame buffer. The display controller then optionally composes several frame buffers to a target image, performs scaling and drives the display interface.

Rendering is - in principle - very processing performance demanding, that’s why high performance graphics typically requires a dedicated rendering engine or Graphics Processor Unit (GPU), sometimes called Graphics Accelerator.

Rendering is required for 2D and 3D graphics; 3D rendering is drastically more complex and therefore requires much more performance and a much higher logic and memory footprint.

TES Portfolio of Rendering Engines, Tools and Services

TES offers a variety of rendering engines, for 2D as well as for 3D, and we are continuously driving the development of new rendering IP cores.

The visualization of complex objects, scientific or technical processes or animated human machine interfaces (HMIs) becomes more and more important and the quality of the display graphics very often decides upon the market the success of a product. Even more, products with premium display graphics drive the market, not only in Consumer Electronics and Automotive, but more and more also in Industrial Control, Test & Measurement and Home Automation etc. Cost-efficiency is another success factory in those markets, so our rendering IP cores are targeted at meeting exactly required features and performance at the right price point. You do not need a full blown 3D rendering engine for implementing a modern HMI!

TES rendering engines can be found in various products in the market today, typically as part of the silicon solutions of our licensees. The most prominent use cases of TES’ rendering engines are automotive dashboard clusters and infotainment systems. We are proud that our graphics technology can be found in various premium cars.

TES offers the complete technology and service chain in Embedded Graphics: from the HMI usability and human factors design, over the implementation of HMIs and graphics applications, an HMI framework, IP core- and API integration and customizations down to the IP cores themselves. With this one-stop-shop approach we are prepared to support the customers of our customers.
